The kids know each other well and played non stop until they hit the sack. We caught up with Guttorm and Deanna and had a superb dinner that Deanna put on. We leave early in the morning, to try to avoid the worst of the Baltimore traffic and to get there and get doing. Our loose plan is to spend the day unloading, sorting and organizing the boat. We will most likely stay in Annapolis until Saturday as the kids are very much looking forward to trick or treating and I wouldn't want to dissapoint Black Beard the pirate, and Obi Wan Kenobi. This works out as I have to change the oil, install sound insulation in the engine compartment and deal with a handful of small this and that to get our cruising home/classroom up to snuff. By the way thanks so much for logging in to our blog and thank you for your emails, calls and well wishes, we remain grateful.

Almost time
I've been home since Oct 20th, there has been a fairly large amount of things to get done. One of the biggest was to get our home rented, we were fortunate to be able to do that quickly and to a friend's son. He is a sure and responsible lad, with a good handshake, I was impressed and happy to have him as our tenant.
We've also had many details like bills and services to cancel, home schooling details for the kids, moving of stuff, the fixing and renting of a rental unit (Laurel and her dad put in a whole new floor while I was gone) passing ongoing business to colleagues, much more moving of stuff, painting, arranging financial bits and pieces, seeing friends, and more and other minutia but there is a spring in my step and a twinkle in my eye... it is really nice to work towards something that is all about you and your family.
Today is the 28th and if all goes well, we will pick up a one way car rental tonight and leave tommorow morning early to Philadelphia where we'll spend an afternoon and night with our good friends Deanna, Guttorm and their kiddos. Then leave early the next morning for Annapolis, Maryland.

Our kids were at a good age, Laurel wasn't working yet, and we had the savings to do it, so we made the decision to go. Right away there was a long list of things to do, but none more important than getting the boat further south quickly so the northeast weather didn't shut us out.
We loaded the boat with gear right away and had it hauled at Brewer's in Freeport, Maine. I painted the bottom, we took out an old transducer, had the engine checked out and finished a list of must do stuff so I could leave as soon as possible. The folks at Brewer's John Brewer, Kristin, Mike and Bob were really great. I had the boat back in the water by Thursday morning and by 11:00 I was on my way. The plan was that I would take the boat to the Chesapeake alone while Laurel stayed with the kids, got the wheels going in renting the house, figured out homeschooling, packing, etc. Then I would hurry back to help and take care of my business. Our goal being to have the family in the Chesapeake, ready to roll down the intercoastal waterway by November 1st.

I left at a leisurly 8:00 AM the following morning. I could afford to leave late because I had to go through the Cape Cod Canal and the current would not be in my favor until 7:

I arrived a couple of miles from the canal at 5:30 and let the boat drift while I made dinner and waited for the current to turn at 7:30. I went through the canal in the dark but the canal is well lit and is easy to go through at any time of night. We were also approaching a full moon so the sky
